What are mailboxes (mail accounts)? What is SMTP and POP3?

A mailbox is a place on the server where emails for you arrive. It is just like a mail box on your front door. When people send emails to you, they are stored in your mailbox and you can retrieve them from it.

A mailbox must have a name; it is also a part of email address which is associated with the mailbox. For example, if you have a website under a [domain] mysite.com, and a mailbox named john, then your email address is john@mysite.com. Whenever people send email to the address john@mysite.com, these mails will be delivered to this mailbox.

In order to retrieve emails from your mailbox, you need a POP3 access. POP3 is a name of Internet protocol which is used to read emails. You don't need to know exactly how it works, because it is handled automatically by your email program. All you need to know is this:

As soon as you enter this information into your mail program, you will be able to read emails from the mailbox.

SMTP is something opposite to POP3. It is a protocol which allows you to send emails. Again, it is handled automatically by your email program, and everything you need to know is the name of the SMTP host. As with POP3, you obtain it from your hosting company.
